If you’ve read my review of the Tesla Model S you’ll have no issue believing me when I say the future is electric. Whether it’s a hybrid or fully electric motor, countless brands are exploring electric power but none are doing so like Zelectric Motors.
The San Diego company have redefined the phrase ‘out with the old and in with the new’ creating 100% electric versions of the iconic VW Beetle. Zelectric Motors purchase Beetle models made between 1958 and 1966, give the cosmetics a once over, add disc brakes and some other custom parts then replaces the combustion engine with a Zelectric drivetrain.
The retrofitted drivetrain runs off two lithium-ion battery packs sourced from EV West, a company who supply components for high-performance electric racing cars (so you know it’s good!). The result is a Beetle with double the horsepower of the original model and a range of 80 to 100 miles on a full charge. Zelectric Motors have done a great job of respecting the vintage nature of the car and created a really unique and sustainable solution to keeping this crowd favourite on the road!
