A Henry Bucks Series written by the buyers for TVG Readers!
I took a little time to Google the term Evolution this evening. Let’s say that it’s “Any process of formation or growth, development often from generation to generation. A process of gradual, peaceful or progressive change”. So very much like a Pokémon – our beloved Henry Bucks is about to evolve once again to what we hope will be the best menswear experience Australia has ever encountered.
Here in Collingwood, Melbourne, we have been working on the new concept for Henry Bucks for what seems likes an eternity. Late nights, too many coffees and a whole lot of travel have taken us to showrooms and factories in Paris, Milan, Florence, Hong Kong and London to curate the best selection of garments, accessories and footwear available to fill our stores around Australia. After countless meetings with architects, renovation teams, designers and safety experts, we are finally underway, shutting the doors at 320 Collins Street last week for the work to begin!
The space itself is going to be very different; we are literately raising the roof a metre and changing all the fittings and fixtures – without losing any of our current personality or history. Upstairs will become a contemporary menswear hub while downstairs will house the traditional collections. I added some sneak peek photos we took just for TVG to show you the development and how we are getting along, and also a preview of the fixtures and fittings.
We also have a sculptural element along the café filled ally called Equitable Place next to our store which you will see in parts on the factory floor! We want our clients to feel at home in the new store so we’ve developed a little lounge area where people can discover the best menswear magazines in the world; Leon, Men’s Ex, Monacle, Monsieur, Plaza Oumo and The Rake while enjoying a coffee, and of course, some epic menswear chat.
On our regular trips to Florence to attend Pitti Uomo we see some of the best collections in the world, as well as the who’s who of best-dressed menswear icons. For us, we gain just as much inspiration from the street style’in and the architecture in the city as we do from the show itself. It’s a magical place to say the least.
This year at Pitti we added some unbelievable new collections to the Henry Bucks family. Being such an old business, most of the suppliers we meet have been sending us goods for more than 15 years, so it’s also great to catch up with the brands that have helped shape the business we are today!
Just to give you a little bit of an idea of who we captured (Pokémon reference again), here are a few of the new collections: Slowear (famous for Incotex trousers, Zanone, Glanshirt and Montedoro), Paul Smith (we love the the Red Ear line inspired by Japanese workwear), Richard James of Savile Row, Begg Scarfs, much more Boglioli, Sunspel and John Smedley options, too much Drakes (we went to the factory this time – see some photos below), Three Over One (local to Sydney).
A new improved shoe department featuring players like Carmina, Buttero, Sanders casual shoes, Christian Kimber, Sebago shoes as well our current Church’s and Loake options. Our private label, all made in Italy and mostly Naples is also some of the finest menswear we’ve ever had in store and our new tailoring offering is really going to change the game! Later in the year we’ll also be introducing Isaia, Woolrich, Lubieum and many more.
Stay tuned for an update on the refurbishments at Henry Bucks. We’re pumped to deliver a brand new experience to our new and valued clientele!
