Uppercut Deluxe – Bringing Back the Barber

Have you ever been caught balls deep in a Kora by Miranda Kerr mud mask or been forced to hide your John Frieda sea salt volumising spray from the world? Pamper in silence no more gents, as hardy Australian grooming brand Uppercut Deluxe has stripped it back to high quality man basics that you won’t need to keep under lock and key.

Uppercut Deluxe (backed by surfing young gun Jack Freestone) was created by actual barbers Luke Newman and Steve Purcell, the brains behind cult Brisbane barbershop Bare Bones, who where drawn to the rich history of barbering.

“It’s made to be a product that all dudes like and can relate to, it’s meant to be easy,” says Steve.

The guys decided to first create a pomade inspired by Luke’s grandfather, Willy O’Shea, nicknamed ‘Uppercut’, who was a boxer that toured during the Great Depression.  The range now includes four distinct tins, shampoo, conditioner, soap, shaving cream, moisturiser and mo wax thrown in for good measure.

TVG went along to a styling session at the aptly named The Barber Shop, to road test the range with Uppercut’s co-founder Steve and the Gandalf of Barbers, Tommy J.

The guys gave us their tips on which products are best for each look. The signature Pomade is versatile – perfect for a classic style. For a more lightweight matt finish, Tommy J suggests the Featherweight.  For the time poor hustler who just can’t even right now, try Matt Clay for a no fuss messy look that can be re-worked throughout yo busy sched.
