There are few events on the world stage that are as classically elegant as the Academy Awards. While 99 percent of the eyes on the Dolby Theatre’s red carpet are drawn to the attendee’s choice of threads for the evening, a select few are out to spy the timepieces of the rich and famous, and boy were they in for a treat last night.
While most kept to the tasteful and graceful choices we’ve come to expect for the Oscars, there were a few standout selections also. Let’s take a look at the prefered watches of Hollywood’s leading gents and the garments they chose to pair it with.
Rami Malek – Cartier Tank Américaine ref. WSTA0018
Unlike the man he played in his award-winning performance, Rami Malek’s style for the night was considered, and conservative. The timepiece that sat on his wrist was similar; the Cartier Tank Américaine is elegant and precise – ideal for a winner of the 91st Academy Awards.
Mahershala Ali – Santos de Cartier Skeleton ref. WHSA0007
As you can tell pretty early on, Cartier had as good a night as any of these winners during the 2019 Oscars. With his second career win, Ali mixed some traditional aesthetic with some contemporary details. One of those contemporary details included this Santos de Cartier Skeleton, a recent, particularly masculine release, on behalf of Cartier.
Ryan Seacrest – Rolex Daytona ref. 6263
Much like his career, Ryan Seacrest’s pick of a watch for the night was especially vintage. Fortunately for Seacrest, you can’t go wrong with a classic Rolex Daytona, especially the yellow-gold casing and black accents of this killer ref. 6263.
Nicholas Hoult – Jaeger-LeCoultre Classic Large Duoface Small Seconds Reverso – ref. 2842520
Following a familiar trend of this awards season, Nicholas Hoult followed his own creative interpretation of the fail-safe tuxedo. Although his clothing was experimental, Hoult’s timepiece was a guaranteed winner. The pink gold of the Reverso added an extra touch of charm to his all-black outfit.
Jimmy Chin – Panerai Luminor 1950 GMT ref. PAM00423
Alongside his wife and co-director, Jimmy Chin won the Oscar for Free Solo, a film following free climber Alex Honnold’s scaling of Yosemite’s El Captian Mountain. Therefore, it’s no surprise Jimmy chose to rock a sportier piece, going with brash Luminor 1950 GMT.
Chris Evans – IWC Portugieser Chronograph ref. IW371482
Chris Evans wasn’t up for an award last night, but that didn’t stop him turning heads on the carpet with a unique yet brilliant turquoise jacket. This black-dial, gold-case IWC offering paired with the style perfectly. Alongside Cartier, IWC was certainly one of the most worn watches of the night.
Paul Rudd – IWC Portugieser Automatic ref. IWC500710
Both Paul Rudd and Henry Golding went with IWC Portugieser Automatics at the Oscars 2019 – a strong choice for a Pilot’s watch. Rudd went with a silver case/blue face combination that complemented his classic tuxedo nicely. The number of wrists that had an IWC wrapped around them last night is a clear indication of the company’s continuing staying power.
Michael B. Jordan – Piaget Polo Tourbillon ref. GOA32149
Michael B. Jordan has had a huge year, and this year’s Oscars was no exception. The biggest story for him (other than Black Panther’s three Oscar wins), was his choice to take his mum to the awards night. This act on Jordan’s behalf was all class, and so too was his choice of timepiece. Although his sleeves covered the Piaget piece for most of the night, the incredibly expensive sparkle on his wrist caught the attention of many watch enthusiasts.
Bradley Cooper – IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Single Piece ref. IW500923
Few have the personality and the presence to pull off a Big Pilot at the Oscars, but here we have the man of the hour, Bradley Cooper, representing IWC with this grand and gorgeous statement. This is exact watch is actually already up for auction via Sotheby’s to benefit the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation.
Christian Bale – Santos de Cartier ref. WSSA0013
It’s only right that we close this list the same way we started it – with an award-winning actor rocking a superb Cartier. Not one to flash his wealth, Bale chose to wore the subtle yet distinct Santos de Cartier which can be best described as a humble brag.
Many of these watches were featured at SIHH 2019, and rightfully so. For our favourites of this year’s SIHH, see the ’10 Best Watches At SIHH 2019.’
