The Bearded Man on Chapel St Prahran has only been open for a week but I can already tell it’s going to be a big hit. Melbourne’s latest ‘male focused’ lifestyle offering combines three of my favourite things, barbering, coffee and music and does all of them very well, in a beautifully put together space.
Head barber Josh Mihan has teamed up with Melbourne’s top boutique roaster Industry Beans to create delicious coffee for the shop’s barbering and walk-in customers. Quality coffees are accompanied by Josh’s passion for disco which spins on vinyl out of the DJ booth at the rear of the store. “Music is a going to be a huge part of this space,” says Josh. “We’ve got guys coming in everyday to practise, and record sets, and an elevated platform for bands.” With a liquor license on the way the space will be able to host small events and will be open late Friday for drinks (and quite possibly some dancing).
While beans and beats are a critical component of Josh’s mix it’s clear barbering is at the core of the business. Backed by 14 years of experience across Europe and South America, Josh has put together his favourite techniques, products and finishing touches to offer customers haircuts, beard trims and wet shaves. Fellow barber and barista Neville presented me with a cappuccino before Josh reclined my seat and trimmed by beard finishing the cut with a hot towel and local Sandalwood beard oil – a lovely touch.
With five chairs and fellow barbers David and Neville on hand to assist, The Bearded Man is capable of doing a serious trade. Combine that with quality coffee, top tunes and a great casual vibe we’re pretty certain that it will.
