Behind the bars & coffee machines of Sydney, almost every day I see beards… I myself have had a beard for the most part of winter… until now. This week I decided to visit a new establishment called The Barber Shop.
Barber Shop location
The Barbershop sits on 89 York Street, Sydney, surrounded by an esteemed list of small bars including; Mojo Records & The Rook – making York Street a really vibrant & exciting area to drink.
Having only opened just over 2 weeks ago I was delighted to have had the opportunity to sit with Mike himself before experiencing the full package of offerings from the bar.
It is the first solo venture set up by Mr Mike Enright, who has previously been responsible for managing the Merivale empire for over five years. Mike is a well-travelled bar owner with a passion for getting things done the right way. He explained to me that he has stewed over the idea of opening a barbershop & bar for years, as he himself had studied to become a barber in a previous life in the UK, before moving to Australia. It has finally come to fruition backed by his years of experience, balanced with a sense of personal nostalgia.
The bar is aesthetically polished & Mikes knowledge of how a successful bar operates is undoubted, however, the subtle British references are what makes this bar personal & different from the rest – including a selection of old-fashioned cocktails modelled off pubs in the UK & a gin tap just because it happens to be his favourite drink. The details & flavours of Mikes personality which he has left on the bar are what makes it a special place to be – what was once a vision has now become a reality inside the space. Mike took the time out of his busy schedule to have a conversation with me & share his thoughts & not once (despite it ringing constantly) did he check his phone. He is a proper gentleman who believes in good hospitality.
Hair cut & beard trim
I sat in the barber chair & enjoyed a meticulous haircut. Also, a cutthroat shave & hot towel treatment by the Head Barber Rowwhowhom has also travelled the world perfecting his craft. He was not only great at what he did, but he provided great company for the hour-or-so it took to make my beard disappear. I got out of the chair satisfied and with a new hairstyle.
Barber Shop menu
The Barbershop has an incredibly extensive drinks list that flows over 3 pages on their menu, covering all preferences. The Head Bartender, Will Oxenham made me his recommended special, an “Apple, Celery & Ginger Fizz” – which was a blend of Apple Brandy, house-made Celery Liqueur, Ginger & Apple Cider… it was delightful & refreshing.
Mike left me with the idea that he wants to create an environment where gentlemen can come for a meeting & a shave… that being the intention, the place is perfect. If you have any business you need to discuss with another gent & your hair needs some attention, be sure to head along to The Barbershop, 89 York Street, Sydney… it truly is a pleasurable experience.
