I’ve been fairly vocal about my admiration for Tesla. The Model S is one of the most impressive vehicles I’ve ever driven, you can read my review if you’re interested. This week Elon Musk launched the world’s first fully electric SUV, the Tesla Model X, building on the innovative technologies in the Model S to create the smartest, cleanest and safest car (not just SUV), in the world.
Musk kicked off his presentation by announcing the Model X as the safest SUV on the planet, citing the absence of an engine block resulting in a minimised crumple zone on frontal impact, and half the rollover propensity due to the car’s low centre of mass from the battery pack. He then went on to present the Model X’s first true HEPA filter in a car, drastically improving exterior air filtration for passengers. He moves onto showcasing the automatic blind holster for your mobile, the car’s automatic opening and closing front, and Falcon wing doors, actuating on dual hinges to open even in the tightest spaces.
The car’s ultra sonic sensors automatically detect roof heights to stop the doors from opening to high in foreign spaces. Along with being able to tow 2.5 tonne with 7 people on board, the accessories hitch, which can be installed in 5 seconds, can carry bikes, skis, and snowboards without obstructing the use of the boot. Then at the end of it all performance figures are staggering with the top spec car doing 0-100 in 3.2 seconds with a 250 mile range.
I’m gobsmacked, seriously. Elon Musk is an actual genius. Just watch the video below and see this world changing car in all of its glory.
