Last month’s article about Aussie John’s 73m Superyacht Hasna, received a lot of heat so I thought I’d share some details of a vessel he could have purchased instead, SYBARIS.
Launched in 2016 by the renowned Perini Navi shipyard, who also built the Maltese Falcon, SYBARIS was named ‘Sailing Yacht of the Year’ as well as winning the category for ‘Sailing Yachts 40m and Above’ at the 2017 World Superyacht Awards, and it’s not hard to see why.
Describing her as a “ground-breaking, world-class sailing yacht”, the Award’s judges said, “SYBARIS not only impressed us with its sailing ability – particularly in light airs when many yachts of this size resort to mechanical power – but also in the yacht’s supreme comfort and optimum division of internal volume”.
Given her sleek looks and performance, the amount of space and luxury afforded by the interior is nothing short of miraculous. Able to comfortably accommodate 12 guests, the layout includes an Owner’s suite, two VIP staterooms and three double cabins. The spacious full-beam Owner’s suite includes two bathrooms, a dressing area, walk-in wardrobe, an office and lounge. Interior features include the striking use of titanium, with bespoke furniture paying homage to this yacht’s serious sailing culture and in some cases even doubling as artwork.
Owner Bill Duker (lawyer-turned-software mogul) reflects on the design of SYBARIS. “We were going for a clean, modern, different look, but it was designed to be something that was beautiful, where every piece of furniture and every joint was tasteful and worked together harmoniously.” – BOAT International has a good interview with Duker here.
Outside, a broad, well-protected deck runs off the main salon, offering private dining and lounging for guests. However, the standout feature is a 18m flybridge offering a spectacular vantage point and thrilling experience when under sail.
Across the interior and exterior SYBARIS enjoys exceptional use of lighting, creating a perfect ambience. As one of the most technically sound yachts ever built, SYBARIS’ sailing prowess is unmatched. Cutting edge sailing tech includes two carbon masts, custom produced by the Dutch firm Rondal, a retractable keel, 3DL North Sails and a new captive winch system.
SYBARIS is currently residing in the Monaco area and Duker is asking a reasonable €88 million for her. Edminston Brokerage has the listing.
