Last week we were invited to take part in a relatively new offering by Sheraton On The Park. The hotels finest mixologists led an interactive masterclass in their Conservatory Bar, teaching their secrets to a great cocktail.
The Conservatory Bar is a lovely place to enjoy some afternoon drinks. Just a level above the hotel lobby, the room incorporates the decadence of a world class hotel, with floor to ceiling windows boasting views of Hyde Park.
The class was held in a space just in front of these windows & with Sydney’s current weather situation it allowed us to feel sheltered as we watched the rain take the city. The intimate group was led by the Assistant Food & Beverage Manager John-Michael Hilton, who deserves credit as being an incredibly enthusiastic & patient teacher… as most of the participants (including me) were amateur to say the least.
We shook, stirred, strained & muddled our way through ingredients until they somewhat resembled the professional looking cocktails demonstrated by the experts. After we had made it through a selection of chosen drinks, we embarked on a “mystery box challenge”. For me & my partner this meant chucking a bunch of things we liked in a glass & shaking it together. Needless to say our cocktail lacked that refined balance we so carelessly sought after… we came last & our drink was barely drinkable.
Although our efforts may not have been up to scratch, there was no doubt that we had a lot of fun doing it. After the class we were served with some cocktails off the impressive Conservatory Bar cocktail list & some canapés, including a delightful desert pizza that I couldn’t help but mention!
The mixology class provides the perfect experience for an afternoon celebration or corporate function.
