For a man that lost the right to use his own personal brand name and (and bought it back in June 2011) its been an interesting few years for Peter Morrissey . A lot has changed since the illustrious 80’s with Morrissey opting to steer away from ‘high’ fashion and focus his talents on dressing the rest of Australia. TVG was invited to Icebergs Dining Room and Bar to celebrate 30 years in fashion and the launch of his new sunglasses range backed by the team at Sunshades Eyewear (Ksubi, Karen Walker, Le Specs).
The lunch was a delight, and at such an intimate affair it was a great chance to have a chat with Peter. Peter, who was dressed head to toe in his new men’s range designed for and sold exclusively at Big W, rocked his classic ‘Morrissey’ look and I was impressed, not just with the clothes but the man himself. His character shines through his black suit jacket and radiates with subdued flamboyance, he’s a pleasure to be around and is interested in what each and every person has to say. Our group chatted about the nuances of Peter’s life, his new roll on Project Runway, the Big W range and of course his new Summer 2012 sunglasses.
One particular thing he said resonated a lot with me and I’ve thought about it a lot since the event. He said that “in one month at Big W I’ve dressed more people than I did in a year at Morrissey.” I think there’s something unbelievably humble about his new angle in fashion and I sensed that he took a lot of pride in the fact that his products at Big W provide happiness to so many more people than his designs did at Morrissey.
Like Peter himself, his new sunglasses range features classic styles and attentive details embracing 30 years of Morrissey design and innovation and re-establishes his name as a true icon in Australian fashion.
