No CommonScents: Helmut Lang Eau de Cologne

When it comes to colognes, I’m no expert. Just a punter with a serious appetite for all things redolence. Introducing Eau de Cologne by Helmut Lang.

Firstly, a brief rundown!

Helmut Lang is an Austrian fashion guru who started his own brand in 1986 called…. Helmut Lang. Over the next 25 years, the brand would grow into an international high-end fashion juggernaut, found in top department stores as well as select retailers all over the world. In 2004 the company was sold to Prada then later sold to a Japanese company which re-launched the fashion brand without Helmut Lang onboard.

In the early 2000’s while the company was still owned by Helmut, he released three distinct fragrances. Eau de Cologne, Eau de Parfum, which is a sexy floral oriental scent, and Cuiron which is a peppery masculine fragrance responsible for more leather than a German bondage chamber.

The fragrances were hugely popular until they were discontinued in 2005. Some pundits will tell you that the re-release isn’t as good as the original which is either a wanky way of letting you know they ‘had the original’ before it was discontinued or the secret methods and ingredients to the originals were lost and had to be recreated!! Either way, my opinions are useless because in 2000 I was 14 smothered in Lynx Africa wearing Von Dutch hats!

The re-issue of ‘Eau de Cologne’ was brought back to life by industry legend and one of my favourite perfumers Maurice Roucel who is responsible for scents such as Hypnose by Lancome, Rochas Man as well as the iconic DKNY ‘be delicious’ range. He was also responsible for the original Helmut Lang Eau de Parfum in 2000.

The scent itself is insanely elegant with a warm musk, and vanilla notes that settle nicely on the skin. It has a subtle sweetness rather than a harsh sugar hit. With top notes of lavender, rosemary, orange blossom and jasmine and bottom notes of patchouli, musk, sandalwood, cedar and vanilla, this scent gives off a powdery feel which is insanely nostalgic.

A true signature scent, this versatile fragrance would accompany a dinner suit as flawlessly as it would a sunny day in the member’s stand at Randwick.
