I caught my first glimpse of the Mercedes AMG GT R while watching the Goodwood FOS speed coverage this year. Shmee 150 then posted a video about the car, which he has placed an order for (adding to his fleet of exotics).
This particular beast is the track-focused variant of the Mercedes AMG GT which we’ll be driving next month at Phillip Island. The AMG GT R gets a modified version of the AMG GT’s 4-litre twin-turbo V8 with more efficient turbos and a new exhaust system good for a staggering 430kW.
The GT R is also lighter than top spec AMG GT S weighing in at 1,555kg and sprinting to 100kmh in 3.6 seconds, putting it on par with the (notably more powerful) SLS AMG Black Series. There’s no doubt Mercedes had the enthusiast in mind when they created the manually adjustable, lightweight, forged aluminium suspension – don’t worry it also comes with electronic, adaptive damping controls if you’d prefer not to get your hands dirty.
“It combines the driving dynamics of our AMG GT3 racing car with the everyday practicality of the AMG GT,” promises AMG chief Tobias Moers.
Tobias could have read that line off the Porsche 911 GT3 RS press release. Will be interesting to see how the two stack up when the Mercedes AMG GT R arrives in July 2017.
