If you’ve passed through Westfield Sydney in the past couple of weeks you may have noticed an intriguing silver structure erected on Level 3.
Said UFO like structure is in fact the very first Louis Vuitton Pop-up Store in Sydney housing the latest creations from men’s collections Artistic Director Mr Kim Jones. Formerly creative director and driving force behind the contemporisation of Alfred Dunhill’s menswear collections from 2008 to 2011, Jones’s Spring-Summer 2017 Pre-Collection, pays homage to African inspirations.
Refreshingly, Kim Jones’s African inspirations are as genuine as one could imagine. Born in London in 1979 to an English father and Danish mother, the family moved to Ecuador when Kim was just three months old. He spent his childhood moving across the continent with his father’s job spending time in the Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania and returned to travel through the region before beginnings his career in fashion.
To help bring his concept to life Jones enlisted the creative minds of the Chapman Brothers, whom he’d worked with on previous collections. Dinos and Jake Chapman based their almost demonic interpretations from vintage illustrations found in a book drawn by early explorers in Cape Town. Their eccentric creations not only cover the floor and surrounding walls but adorn delicate viscose shirts, technical outerwear and Louis Vuitton’s signature monogrammed leather goods, which includes products exclusive to Sydney. The collection is casual and progressive yet remains true to Jones’s penchant for tailored menswear.
The Louis Vuitton Pop-up store is located on level 3, Westfield Sydney and will be open until December 18.
