James Bond has worn many watches since he debuted in Casino Royale in 1953, but it is Omega who have reliably supported Bond in every 007 film since GoldenEye in 1995.
The Omega Seamaster has become synonymous with modern day James Bond and this year the brand was asked to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Goldfinger by designing a one-of-a-kind timepiece – naturally they went with the theme of ‘Gold’.
This special edition James Bond Goldfinger Omega Aquaterra features the same 38.5 mm case sized specifically for Daniel Craig’s wrist in an explosion of 18K yellow gold with matching bracelet. In fact, the entire watch is gold, paying homage to the character that inspired it. The dial is 18K yellow gold and so are the hands (coated in Super-LumiNova of course), including the 007 counterweight on the central seconds hand.
The watch is powered by the Omega Master Co-Axial calibre 8501 resistant to magnetic fields greater than 15,000 gauss and revealed through a transparent crystal caseback. The movement that equips this unique Seamaster Aqua Terra features an 18K yellow gold rotor and bridge, distinguishing it from the 18K red gold normally associated with the movement. The oscillating weight is also made of 18K yellow gold. The words engraved on the 18K yellow gold ring around the transparent caseback tell the story: GOLDFINGER, 50TH ANNIVERSARY, UNIQUE PIECE, ANTI-MAGNETIC, > 15,000 GAUSS.
Unfortunately for die hard Bond fans it’s too late to acquire this insane piece of Bond history because it sold yesterday as part of an online auction that celebrated the renowned James Bond film – the price 106,000 CHF ($125,000), almost eight times the estimated value of the watch!
