From a bracelet in college to a globally recognized brand, TVG got the wonderful chance to ask Michael Saiger, founder and owner of MIANSAI, a few questions about the company and his vision.
TVG: How did MIANSAI start?
Michael Siager: MIANSAI is something that happened organically for me and if you asked me 10 years ago what I thought I would be doing, my response probably would have been way different from where my life is now. I’m a crafty guy, have always had an interest in antiques and collectables and appreciate original style. MIANSAI began in 2008 when I made a bracelet for myself while still in college. Every time I’d wear it, people would ask me where I bought it because they wanted one – it made me realize there was an opportunity in a market that no one had tapped, so I began selling a few pieces locally at Base Miami. The rest is history.
There seems to be a lot of men’s jewelry brands out there now, what do you do to stay ahead of the competition?
I have a great team and we all work very hard to continually create product that we’re proud of and our customers will be proud to wear. We are not a trend-focused brand. All our designs are classic and timeless (or so I’d like to think, hah), so there’s always a consistency to what we put out. Last, but not least, MIANSAI looks great from an aesthetics standpoint, is made from premium materials and is priced competitively.
What’s the best part of your job?
Honestly, everything. In a little over 5 years MIANSAI has turned into a globally recognized brand. It would not be where it is today without all of the small details that go into the job, day in and day out; I enjoy it all. But ultimately, I guess the best part is watching MIANSAI grow and develop into what it is, as well as knowing what is in store for the brand’s future.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business?
Take the time to efficiently plan for the growth of your company from all aspects – staffing, space, expenses, etc. Maybe it will get to a point where that plan is necessary, maybe it won’t…but if it does, you’re going to be thankful to be able to hit the ground running instead of having to pause and take time out to plan and restructure.
Also, don’t let anyone tell you something isn’t possible. Not to sound cheesy, but if you really want to do something, it’s possible; sometimes it’s just a matter of finding the proper niche to make it work.
In your eyes, what makes a versatile gentleman?
You’d be surprised how far confidence and manners can take you…
