Ahead of the Los Angeles Motor Show, the hotly anticipated 2016 Fiat 124 Spider has been finally been unveiled.
Originally conceptualised in 2012 as an ’86/BRZ style’ love child between Alfa Romeo and Mazda, the vehicle ended up wearing a Fiat badge and would be constructed in Japan sporting an MX-5 chassis and interior with a Fiat engine.
The resulting 124 Spider is distinctly Mazda MX-5, with some exterior flair, and a turbocharged 1.4 litre four-cylinder power plant (did someone say 500 Abarth?) producing 119kW. New Mazda MX-5 customer’s might be left feeling shortchanged with the 124 Spider producing 1kW and 50 newton metres more than the 2.0 litre MX-5 engine.
I can’t shake this feeling that it looks a bit Chrysler Crossfirey but I’ll wait for more photos from the LA motor show to make a final judgement. Either way, we’re definitely looking forward to jumping behind the wheel!
