Last Thursday TVG was invited to David Jones on Market street to experience their Personal Shopping Service, something we didn’t know existed. Apparently the service has been on offer since August last year but the male uptake has been slower than expected, we could only attribute this to two things – people don’t know it exists or they think it costs money. Well we’re about to tell you it’s free and its fantastic.
I love the idea that David Jones is delivering such a personal service in a store where truly unique service is hard to come by. The Personal Shopping experience takes the daunting nature out of shopping, especially when you’re making a significant change to your wardrobe. David Jones offers so many brands and for the time conscious modern man, sifting through the abundance of styles is not something the majority want to be doing. You know you want to look good and your happy to pay for it but walking through malls and department stores all sunday is not an option. Well now it doesn’t need to be.
From the very start the Personal Shopping experience impresses us. When you walk off the floor on Level 2 into a lavishly appointed room and are greeted by the smiling stylist it seems a little overwhelming that anyone could have gone to such an effort for you. All your clothes are chosen by the stylist before your appointment after a prior consultation about the brands you like and the look you want to achieve. We are offered Champagne and sparkling water, to which we happily oblige, and when we sit down and talk briefly about the service and the clothes to be trialled, the premium quality of the whole experience begins to emerge.
On the rack lies a huge range of brands and styles, all with equally different price points. Jane, the stylist for the night, makes it very clear that this service is not purely for the high-income earners, but for anyone looking to refresh their wardrobe in a worry and stress free manner. There’s a number of things we’d never pick up or pair if we’d been by ourselves and I think that’s the most positive thing about having the stylist there. Mixing $100 Deus chinos with a $2000 Zegna jacket proves that the stylist know what works, and how to add variety to any wardrobe. We start at casual, stroll though smart-casual and finish somewhere between business suit and black tie.
We question Jane about tailoring, and to our surprise she tells us that, if required, every piece of clothing (not just suits) can be custom tailored to fit the client perfectly. This is truly an all round service.
To be honest, if you’re making any major addition to your wardrobe or need multiple items for work or social, this is the only option. The Personal Shopping Service delivers service as it should be, and will need to be, if department stores are going to compete with the rise of online shopping. It’s an exciting feeling walking in and seeing the effort the stylist as gone to. Not only is this a very relaxing and effective way to shop, but as your visits become more frequent the stylist will be more confident and knowledgeable about your personal looks, preferences and wardrobe.
In an age where online markets are squeezing out mortar and brick retail the David Jones Personal Shopping Service is putting the spark back into trying on clothes. Those who are pressed for time, lack brand knowledge, shy away from trying on clothes or simply hate shopping full stop can now purchase in a comfortable and controlled environment.
