If you’ve read our review of the CLA 45 AMG you’d understand why we were excited to hear that the CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake is coming!
Overnight news dropped that Mercedes-Benz will be turning the baby CLA saloon into a wagon under the brand’s ‘Shooting Break’ moniker and like its A 45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and GLA 45 AMG siblings it will get the world’s most powerful production four-cylinder engine. The 2014 ‘Engine of the Year’ is a 2.0-litre turbo that packs a whopping 360bhp and 331lb ft of torque with a seven-speed DCT gearbox and ‘fully-variable’ four-wheel-drive with a 0-100 sprint of just 4.7 seconds.
The new Shooting Brake will take much of its styling direction from the CLS Shooting Brake albeit smaller and stubbier. The AMG of course gets the twin exhaust pipes, spoilers, aprons, AMG lettering, aggressive bodykit and bigger wheels. Non AMG CLA Shooting Brakes will also be available with the option of the 2.1-litre diesel in 136bhp and 177bhp guises, as well as two petrol engines with three power outputs. The 1.6-litre gets 122bhp and 156bhp versions, while the bigger 2.0-litre comes in 211bhp flavour.
All CLA Shooting Brakes provide a very appealing extra serving of space for weekend adventures – 495 litres with the seats up and 1354 litres with the rear seats folded down. You can even spec a ‘cargo’ position that allows space for five and 595 litres of boot.
It’ll be interesting to see how the 0-100km/h sprint is affected with the larger rear because at 4.7 seconds it’s competing with the RS4 Avant for speed (and for practicality!)
