You know that feeling when you think you’ve found an empty car space only to realise it’s not empty, it’s just half filled by a small car. 99% of the time it’s a frustrating situation, that other 1% however, the car in the spot is a Caterham.
Yesterday as I searched for a park in Alexandria (and thinking I’d found one) I stumbled upon a lovely Caterham, sitting neatly between two large vans. A good friend and I used to be obsessed with Caterhams, we’d talk about them constantly, how we planned to buy a kit, source a Cosworth engine and build one of these race cars from scratch over a number of ice cold beers. Yesterday I realised how long it had been since I saw a Caterham and how long it’d been since I thought about one. These cars are the most incredible bang for your buck money can buy. Forget Lotus Exige – you look like a wanker in that, Caterham is for the racing purist delivering unbelievable power to weight performance in a car that weighs a tad more than the All Blacks tight forwards.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to bring Caterham to everyone’s attention because they are truly fantastic cars and unlike the new F12 Berlinetta, perfectly achievable for any man. In my fit of enthusiasm I got home and jumped straight on Carsales to see if there were any good Caterhams on offer – I was pleasantly surprised. A beautiful Roadsport 125 that looks and sounds like it’s been loved by a passionate entusiast.
