The BMW 3.0CSL is a car I have idolised since my father introduced me to the brand as a young chap. Many years later I attended a Bonhams and Goodman car auction where I saw a restored 3.0 CSL finished in ‘Inca Orange’ and truly cemented my love for the CSL’s unique styling.
Naturally when I stumbled across this project by car designer David Obendorfer I stopped to look at it immediately. This CS Concept is a modern interpretation of the 1968 BMW E9 series designed by Giovanni Michelotti. It focuses on two models: Michelotti’s E9 and its predecessor, the 1965 BMW 2000 CS (E120 series).
The BMW CS vintage concept is based on the 6 series platform; the style, despite numerous citations from the past, is substantially contemporaneous with updated proportions and with modern details, many of which are influenced by nautical styling solutions.
To me it combines one of my favourite modern day muscle cars, the Dodge Challenger with the iconic CSL and a touch of the boxy and beautiful BMW E30.
