After attending numerous events at The Mint on Macquarie St in Sydney’s CBD I came to the conclusion that the space was highly underrated so I was excited to hear that the brains behind Bistro Mint shared my thoughts.
Bistro Mint is the result of a close partnership between Sydney Living Museums and Restaurant Associates, and has been meticulously established with the intent of maintaining the iconic Sydney building and resurrecting the concept of ‘eating like the French’ while adding value to The Mint visitor’s experience.
Utilising the top level of The Mint guests are able to dine inside the heritage restaurant or on the expansive balcony overlooking Macquarie St, Hyde Park Barracks and Hyde Park. What was once the the southern wing of Governor Macquarie’s notorious Rum Hospital and later the first overseas branch of London’s Royal Mint, has been tastefully transformed into a contemporary restaurant with modern but understated fittings that blend seamlessly into the historic shell.
We were invited to sample the modern French menu designed by Head Chef Joey Ingram and Sebastien Lutaud and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The menu boasts quality, seasonal and, wherever possible, local produce – something Ingram is committed to maintaining. Along with a selection of French and Australian wines we tasted items from the Bistro’s lunch menu including an amazing shaved calamari, escargot with a wasabi, lemon and butter dressing, delicate scallops meuniere and later a tender veal tongue. (Pictured below) Ingram sustains a quintessentially French theme throughout the menu and at times it’s easy to forget you’re sitting in the centre of Sydney.
While lunch is obviously a key focus Bistro Mint is also pegging itself as authentic French ‘Petit Déjeuner’ (breakfast) spot. Whether it’s a simple croissant and coffee or a Croque Madame or Monsieur with a delicious cup of The Grounds Coffee Bistro Mint is hoping to redefine the morning rush in a relaxed and welcome setting.
Bistro Mint is open from Monday to Friday for breakfast and lunch from 8am to 4pm. You can view the various menus here.
