There’s a lot of companies out there doing ‘custom’ motorbikes, but what exactly is custom? A tank sourced from a vintage bike, a paint job, a hand stitched seat? Or is fabricated tanks, frames and exhaust systems? At Bandit9 it’s a mixture of both these factors, cosmetic and fabrication, and with every new bike they produce they deliver a unique and stylish product drastically different to the last. We featured the Nero last year and if you put the Hephaestus up next to it you wouldn’t for the life of you guess they came out of the same workshop. Where other custom companies have stuck with one reoccurring theme and the same list of project bikes the Beijing-based garage has continued to blow their fans minds with original concepts and versatile base models.
Hephaestus (named in honor of the Greek God of blacksmiths, craftsmen, sculptors and artisans) is an evolution of the 1988 Honda Bros 400, Bandit9 shed the bike’s original plastic exterior and refitted it with a more modern aesthetic, sporting an armour-like exoskeleton with the tank, gas cap, cowl, side covers and fender all handcrafted from stainless steel. The exhausts were shortened to expose the original single swing arm; making the rear wheel appear to float.
The tank was designed to have a mid-line bevel that carries through to the cowl and the fender. The side-covers with a dotted grill pattern were crafted from sheet metal. The handlebars were replaced with clip-ons designed by Bandit9. The rear lights function both as turn signals and brakes. When you signal to turn, the corresponding light flashes. However, both rear lights flash red when you hit the brakes. With this bike Bandit9 also focused on the functionality designing the seat so that it locks the rider in place as well as tapering the tank and relocating the foot pegs to improve riding position and comfort.
