Yesterday Apple released a global launch date and pricing for the first Apple Watch. Customers will be able to preorder all models starting April 10 and shipping will begin on April 24. The press event was somewhat overshadowed by the announcement that the Apple Watch Edition will start at $14,000. The Apple Watch Edition has the same capabilities as the $499 Apple Watch Sport but is housed in an 18 karat gold case.
That $14,000 or $10,000US is enough to buy you an IWC Portuguese or an Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. You will then have the option to spec your Apple Watch Edition to a final retail price of $24,000AUD and I could go on all day with watch suggestions in this price range, JLC, Audemars Piguet, Rolex, Lange, you name it. Are people seriously going to consider this watch over some of the finest names in watchmaking?
The Apple Watch Sport is composed of customised aluminium alloy and comes in silver or Space Gray and the will fetch AU$499 and AU$579 for the 38mm and 42mm models. The Apple Watch (steel case) starts at AU$799 and goes to AU$1,629 depending on the band.
The watch will be able to communicates with your iPhone over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and can be anywhere in house, not just in Bluetooth range. Apple claim it will have “all-day battery life” across a range of uses for a typical 18 hour day.
