Mercedes’ performance arm, AMG, has been working on a rival to the 911 for some time now, all the way back to when the parent company was known as Daimler-Chrysler and the intention was that it should share parts with the Dodge Viper. Which would have been terrible.
Thankfully AMG is going it alone and although the teaser sketch of long bonnet and short haunches looked very Viper-influenced, it is also the basic template for every front-engined, rear-drive sports car ever built. A sketch was all that Mercedes would reveal of the exterior at this stage. The only photos released so far are two interior shots which make the cabin look very red and very wide with a surprisingly upright windscreen for a sports car.
The centre console is apparently shaped liked a NACA air duct as seen on racing cars while the controls adorning it have been arranged in a manner reminiscent of eight cylinders in a V formation. Any guesses as to what will be powering it then? The only other thing we know is the name Mercedes-AMG GT. The rest will be revealed in September, although probably slightly before Mercedes intends, given that very few new models avoid being scooped by the internet these days.
