If you’re looking for a gift and you’re on the run you can’t go past a quality bottle of wine and it’s no secret our friends at Bird in Hand know a thing or two about producing quality wine. We here at TVG have been championing their gear for a while now … not that we like to brag. So, when the news came through that the team had picked up an eye-watering 6 ‘blue-gold’ medals (with 4 of their wines had ranked in the Top 100 of the Sydney International Wine Competition) we weren’t overly surprised.
Touted as the most prestigious wine competition in the country, the Sydney International Wine Competition (SIWC) is as important as it is unique. Each wine is judged on its technical merits as well as its compatibility to food, making it the only major competition of its kind in the Australia.
The list of worthy award-winners includes:
Blue Gold & Top 100 – 2010 News Egg Cabernet Sauvignon – $99
This Cabernet has an intense deep red colour, the nose reveals blackcurrant, dark plums, aniseed and clove flavours. Firm yet fine integrated gentle tannins support the flavours by adding structure and depth.
Blue Gold & Top 100 – 2007 Nest Egg ‘Joy’ Sparkling Pinot Noir – $79
Made in the traditional ‘methode champenoise’ style. After bottle fermentation the wine was aged on yeast lees for 18 months and shows fresh bread, brioche flavours and a creamy texture with outstanding finesse.
Blue Gold & Top 100 – 2012 Bird in Hand Shiraz – $35
This Shiraz has rich aromas of ripe blackberries and plums. The elegant palate has the characteristic flavours of cool climate Shiraz including spice, peppers, blackberry and blackcurrant. Cellaring will reward.
Blue Gold & Top 100 – Two in the Bush Merlot Cabernet – $20
Lifted aromas include ripe red fruits, fleshy plums and subtle oak. The rich, vibrant palate has hints of blackcurrant, nutmeg, briar and cedar. The intense dark berry flavours of the Merlot balance the length and structure of the Cab.
Blue Gold – 2012 Bird in Hand Cabernet Sauvignon – $35
Deep crimson in colour, exhibiting rich varietal aromas of blackcurrant, aniseed, violets and spice. The palate mirrors these varietal aromas adding herbaceous flavours with lithe tannins providing its excellent structure.
Blue Gold – 2012 Two in the Bush Shiraz – $20
A wine with intense aromas of rich dark berries and exotic spice. The palate has blackberries, white pepper and mocha characteristics with a long, flavoursome finish. This wine has instant appeal, but will age for 5 years.
Check them out – they are absolutely stunning, expressive wines and the perfect Christmas gift suiting a range of budgets.
And just when you think the team were done with winning, they go and pick up more GOLD, this time in the Global Chardonnay Masters Tasting in London (a massive deal and no small feat). Judged by a panel of 14 which included 10 Master of Wine’s and 2 Master Sommeliers, BIRD in HAND Chardonnay 2012 took Gold, as did their super premium 2010 ‘Nest Egg’ Chardonnay.
