For years now we’ve seen guys dressing down their suits by pairing them with a fresh pair of sneakers. Two years ago we ran a somewhat controversial editorial for Emporio Armani, pairing premium suits with the latest and flashiest Nike running shoes. Although that particular pairing was a bit extreme for some, the idea behind dressing down the everyday suit through footwear choice continues to be very prevalent in the menswear world – and with Pitti Uomo 86 kicking off this week, we’ll no doubt see a continuation of this trend.
The key to matching sneakers with tailored pants is about being subtle with colour, material and shape. You don’t want to look bottom heavy with a pair of oversized shoes, so keep the soles thin, the shape narrow and colours in line with the rest of your outfit.
Some say comfort must be sacrificed for looks when it comes to shoes, and anyone who’s broken in a stiff pair of Oxford’s will no doubt agree. That said, there’s no better feeling than slipping on a pair of shoes straight from the box that fit like a glove and won’t give you a moments trouble. This feeling is most often achieved with sneakers. Below we’ve outlined the 13 best sneakers to wear with a suit or with tailored pants:
Frankies Shoes Bianco – $160
Nike Roshe Run Mesh Sneakers – $159
Nike Free 4.0 Flyknit – $119
Common Projects Red Leather – $469
APC Tennis Shoe White– $380
Feit Hand Sewn Low – $482
Acne Studios Adrian Leather – $480
